Description

Mimusops balata is a member of the Sapotaceae family native to Mauritius and Reunion Island off the coast of Africa. Now found and planted in many Pacific and Indian Ocean countries. Can grow up to 20m.The fruit is eaten raw and is  said to taste like sapodilla. The wood is harvested and commercially exploited. Studies have shown the gastroprotective/antiulcer potential of fruits from Mimusops balata and showed that this effect is exclusive to the seeds. A leaf decoction is astringent and traditionally used to treat diarrhoea, dysentery and haemorrhage

Care and Cultivation of Mimusops balata
