Description

Hylocereus polyrhizus is a red skin and red flesh Dragon Fruit, also called Pitaya. The fruit can weigh up to 1kg. The flesh and the seeds are eaten, the skin is discarded. Simply cut in half and scoop out!

Care and Cultivation of Hylocereus polyrhizus

Hylocereus polyrhizus seeds should be sown just under the surface of a good quality cacti and succulent mix. Cover pot with plastic wrapping to keep humidity high. Seeds will germinate in one to three weeks. Keep in part shade until germination. Seedlings can be slowly uncovered and adjusted to increasing sunlight over the weeks.

An easily cultivated, fast growing epiphyte or xerophyte. Needs a compost containing plenty of humus and sufficient moisture in summer. Can be grown in semi-shade or full sun. Extra light in the early spring will stimulate budding. Flowers in summer or autumn.
