Curcuma longa or Turmeric is native to the Indian subcontinent. A member of the Zingiberaceae or ginger family. Widely used in cooking, especially curries, for both its colour and flavour. Can be used fresh or dried. It is used as a dye for its brilliant yellow/orange colour. In Ayurvedic practices, turmeric has been used to treat a variety of internal disorders, such as indigestion, throat infections, common colds, or liver ailments, as well as topically to cleanse wounds or treat skin sores. Care and Cultivation of Curcuma longa
Our Turmeric is shipped as a dormant rhizome. Best not to sow until spring or if you can provide warm conditions. The rhizome will survive for a number of months out of the ground generally. Plant 1-2cm under the surface of a good quality seed raising/potting mix, or directly into the garden. Likes a part shade to full sun position. Fertilise moderately to well over the growing season. Tolerant of a lot of positions in the garden.
