Description

A grass like plant, usually growing in solitary clumps, in the Hypoxidaceae family. Native to NSW, QLD and NT. Flowers at ground level in early spring/summer, and the fruits are generally just under the surface of the soil once pollinated and developed. Propagated from seed, the tap root is edible and was eaten by Aboriginal people. I’ve also seen hares and bush turkeys digging up and eating the roots of this species. A related species, Curculigo orchioides, is used in TCM and Ayurvedic medicine for has many uses.

Care and Cultivation of Curculigo ensifolia
