Description
Trichocereus bridgesii is a South American columnar cactus species from Bolivia.. An upright species to 2-6 metres tall, large nocturnal white flowers and edible fruit. Trichocereus bridgesii is traditionally used in similar ways as Trichocereus pachanoi (San Pedro) but known locally as Achuma. Luther Burbank is a peruvianoid specimen named after the famous botanist and plant breeder Luther Burbank from California, who created hundreds of new varieties of plants in the early 1900s. A Trichocereus once grew in his garden and has since been cloned and shared amongst collectors. An interesting short spine and bluish cactus I originally grew from seeds from Sacred Succulents in the US.
Care and Cultivation of Trichocereus
Keep Trichocereus in part-shade until large enough to deal with full-sun, which will depend on the increasing exposure you give the cactus. Once established, Trichocereus species can be watered most of the year in all climates, although they will cease to grow or slow right down over winter in colder areas. Fertilise regularly with fish emulsion/seaweed at half strength over the growing season. Osmocote is also useful.
