Description
Duboisia leichhardtii is a member of the Solanaceae family, native to South Eastern and South Central Queensland. Tall shrub or small tree to 12 m; bark thick and corky towards base (see pictures). Leaves and bark are quite similar in shape to Duboisia hopwoodii.
Named after the German born early Australian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who discovered (well, discovered a few thousand years after Aboriginal Australians) an unusual plant on one of his expeditions in Queensland. It was later described by Ferdinand Von Mueller as Anthocercis leichhardtii (these days Duboisia leichhardtii).
The leaves of Duboisia leichhardtii are rich in tropane alkaloids, namely scopolamine and hyoscyamine. A hybrid of Duboisia leichhardtii and Duboisia myoporoides is grown commercially in SE Qld as a raw material for the pharmaceutical industry.
Care and Cultivation of Duboisia leichhardtii
Duboisia leichhardtii likes a full sun position with well drained soil. More tolerant or soil conditions and moisture than D. hopwoodii. Drought hardy. Flowers in spring/fruit in Summer. Can be grafted to other Duboisia species. Likely pollinated by ant or fly species.
