Description

A member of the Curcurbitaceae family, Trichosanthes subvelutina is native to subtropical rainforest from the Alstonville Plateau (NSW) to just north of Gympie (Qld), with a disjunct population on Gloucester Island east of Bowen (Qld). Simple leaves, palmately lobed, pubescent with tendrils. Stems up to 8m long, which climb straight up, not twining. A medium sized 8-15cm ellipsoid fruit, which doesn’t appear to be edible. The yam like root was reported dug by Aboriginals and eaten, probably cooked. Still, this is a beautiful addition to the native garden, with large showy white flowers. It would also suit training into a succulent bonsai, raising the tuber for effect.

Care and Cultivation of Trichosanthes subvelutina

Sow Trichosanthes subvelutina seed in spring/summer or all year round in warm climates. I nick the seeds at one end (away from embryo which is the pointy end). Bottom heat is preferred, around 22-25ºC.  Full-sun to part-shade. Has fertiliser and water requirements like pumpkins, cucumbers and other gourds. They like to clamber and climb right over anything, a fence or a tree and can be quite vigorous. May die back to ground level in colder areas. Forms a large underground tuber from which it will regrow when warmer conditions arrive.

5 seeds per packet
