Description

Psychotria viridis is used traditionally in South America as an Ayahuasca additive. Ayahuasca is a word from the Kechua tribe meaning ‘Vine of the soul’ and refers to the main ingredient of the Ayahuasca drink, Banisteriopsis caapi.

Psychotria viridis and hybrids are similar to a number of species within the Rubiaceae family that can form new plants via vegetative propagation of leaf pieces. This would be an advantage in humid jungle environments where a reliable humidity and temperature would help this propagation method.

Care and Cultivation of Psychotria species

Relatively medium to fast growing plant if kept in a warm position. Prefers a shady, moist, well-drained site and a rich loam soil with adequate fertiliser. Psychotria viridis is not particularly cold tolerant, depending on micro-climate, preferring tropical/subtropical regions, but can survive further south if protected over the colder months.

These leaves are fresh and ready for propagation as leaf cuttings. Simply prepare the leaves by bending or cutting into pieces (whatever your preferred method), place in prepared medium under humidity, water in, keep moist and new plants should appear in 1-3 months. Leaves are shipped in coco peat to retain freshness.
