Description
Candelabra stems to 10in. Stems to 4in diameter, dark green epidermis, new growth blushed blue. 5-7 radial spines, the downward facing ones up to 1.5in long. 1 central spine to 2.5in. New spines yellow to red-brown in color. Growing on rocky cliffs, western slopes above the north end of the modern town of Chavin, 10,600m, Ancash Dept., Peru. Looks intermediate to T. santaensis (pachanoi) and T. cuzcoensis. This is the plant that grows around the 3000 year old ruins of the temple of Chavin de Huantar, and is likely what is represented in the oldest known human artwork depicting a succulent plant in the entheogenic rock carvings present there.

Care and Cultivation of Trichocereus sp. – Chavin de Huantar
Trichocereus ‘Chavin de Huantar’ likes a well drained potting mix, similar to what is used for most plants. Once established, Trichocereus species can be watered most of the year in all climates. Like most cacti, they are also extremely drought tolerant. Fertilise regularly over the warmer months, fish emulsion and seaweed are excellent for these cacti.
