Description
Trichocereus pachanoi is a South American cactus species used traditionally for divining purposes. Named after Professor Aberlardo Pachano who travelled with Dr. Rose, the original western collector, in 1918 (Trout, 2005). An upright species to 6 metres tall. Also an excellent grafting stock.
Huaral is a geographical territory which lies north of the capital of Peru, located 80 km north of Lima, but starting its territory by the coastal side at kilometer 58 of the North Panamerican Highway, in the middle of the “Serpentín de Pasamayo”. The territory of the city includes the coastal strip comprising all the Chancay valley to the high peaks of Vichaycocha, the source of the Chackal or Pasacmayo “Moon River”.
The Huaral mother plant was a beautiful spineless T. pachanoi with unique colour, emerald green on the ribs with blueish tips.
Care and Cultivation of Trichocereus pachanoi ‘Huaral’
Keep Huaral in part-shade until large enough to deal with full-sun, which will depend on the increasing exposure you give the cactus. Once established, Trichocereus species can be watered most of the year in all climates, although they will cease to grow or slow right down over winter in colder areas. Fertilise regularly with fish emulsion/seaweed at half strength over the growing season.
1 cactus seedling (approx. 100mm tall)
