Description

Stictocardia beraviensis is native to West Africa and Madagascar and is cultivated as a garden plant throughout the tropical world. Heart shaped (the Stictocardia genus name comes from greek for spotted heart) leaves and bell shaped flowers with crimson pink and yellow orange throat. Grows near sea level and on sandy soils. Capsule approx. 1.8 cm in diameter, seeds subglobose, brown.

Many members of the family are used as food, medicinally and for divination purposes (for example, Rivea corymbosa, Ipomoea violacea and Argyreia nervosa). Ipomoea batatas (Sweet Potato) is a family member used for food production. Stictocardia beraviensis is noted to contain ergot alkaloids in the literature.

Care and Cultivation of Stictocardia beraviensis

A luxuriant vine in tropical and subtropical conditions which has large heart-shaped leaves and pink-purple funnel-shaped flowers. Likes adequate water and a part-shade position in well drained soil. Slightly frost tolerant (it will drop leaves but come back from roots if stems die) and drought tolerant as it can drop all leaves and stay dormant over the dry period.

3 seeds per packet
