Description

Mucuna pruriens is an annual climber with purple flowers from the Fabaceae family. Usually the seed pods of Mucuna pruriens are covered with small irritating hairs, however this variety utilis has shorter hairs which are less irritating and has whitish seeds. It is found in tropical Africa, India and the Caribbean.

Mucuna seeds are high in levodopa (L-DOPA) which increase levels of dopamine in humans when consumed. However Mucuna can be toxic when consumed as a food and requires careful preparation. It is used as a fodder plant and also as a coffee substitute.
