Description

Mimusops elengi, also called Medlar, Spanish Cherry or Bullet Wood, is native to several countries around the world, including Australia. In India it is used in Ayurvedic medicine, treating snake-bite, tooth ache and as a contraceptive. The flowers are used as offering at temples, they have a delicious scent that lasts for several days; the oil is also extracted for perfumes. It is also known to have anti HIV and anti-fungal properties. It produces dyes superior to synthetic products and the plants are used in bonsai (J. Beasley, 2006). A member of the Sapotaceae family, Mimusops also has edible fruit, though the ones in Australia I have tasted are just palatable.

Care and Cultivation

Likes a full sun position and well-drained soil. Will respond well to regular watering over the warmer months. Appears to be tolerant of dry conditions and grows in littoral areas on sandy soils. Mentioned as being a good species for bonsai.
