Lobelia inflata – Indian Tobacco (seed)
$5.50
Description
Lobelia inflata is an annual species of Lobelia from North America. Lobelia inflata was used by native North Americans for bronchial complaints. Forms a rosette of leaves which can be dried and smoked to relieve asthma and decrease nicotine withdrawals. An important ingredient of commercial anti-smoking tobaccos and cough mixtures. Contains a piperidine alkaloid (Lobeline) that stimulates respiration and causes vomiting (hence one of its common names, pukeweed).
Care and Cultivation
Lobelia inflata seed can be tricky to germinate. Should be sown on the soil surface in spring and keep moist until it germinates. The soil should not dry out. Prefers a slightly acidic, rich, moist soil in full sun to part-shade. It tends to germinate easier if you sprinkle it on the ground and turn your back!
