Cactus sp. 1 (seed)

SKU: N/A Category:

This small spineless cactus was used by Native American Indians as a sacrament and holy medicine. A beautiful, delicate cactus that likes a semi-shaded position with regular watering in all seasons except winter, where it should be kept dry. A dry winter encourages flowering.

Care and Cultivation

We now use the Takeaway Tek for germinating most cacti seeds. Click here to view the Takeaway Tek.

The best potting mixes for this genus of cacti are generally those that are almost devoid of organic material. When using a mix composed of crushed granite, gypsum, sand, dolomite, perlite and pumice, we find the roots to be much more fine, capable of extracting nutrients and water, plus the overall health of the plant is increased. Saying that, we do recommend about 5-10% coco peat as the organic part of you blend if you choose, this can cut down on time between waterings if you live in a warm climate. Mulch cacti with crushed rock or pebbles.

Water a few times a week when dry during the hotter months and slowly decrease watering as autumn/winter approach. They enter hibernation during winter and need to be kept dry, this also encourages flowers in the spring/summer. Watering over winter will encourage root rot and death. The cactus will tend to go a little soft and shrink somewhat over winter; this is normal and nothing to worry about.

These cacti are self-pollinating and therefore do not require a second individual to cross-pollinate, although seed set will be much higher when crossed with another individual. Seaweed and fish emulsion are excellent for these cacti, use fortnightly to monthly in the growing season, applied at below the recommended strength. Small amounts of gypsum can be used as a rock fertiliser and we also find dolomite to be excellent (sprinkle a small amount every few months around the cactus to decrease acidity caused by fertilisers; they really love the calcium too).

5 seeds per packet (L. wiliamsii) open pollinated (you’ll get some caespitose)
These seeds are grown in NSW and shipped separately from there, check your state laws before purchase.

100% germination rate using a heated tent for 100 seeds. i was blown away. I have had about 30-50% germination rates for trich seeds from other sellers in the past so the price seemed a little steep but this was amazing. the price is definitely worth it because you are buying all viable seed.

I too have had 100% germination from your 2017 stock. 90% have thrived to a year later.
