A member of the Ericaceae family native to the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America.

The plant contains arbutin, methylarbutin, a bitter principle, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones (mainly arbutin, up to 17%), tannins (up to 15%), phenolic glycosides and flavonoids (Info at Wikipedia).

Used as a urinary antiseptic and as a major part of North American smoking mixes (Kinnikinnick).
