Description

Annona spinescens is small rare tree with the branch tips pointed and having a spiny appearance; these move with the growing tip so its never really spiny or thorny as such. A small tree to 6m with yellow green flowers followed by apple sized, edible and juicy, bright orange fruit with orange flesh. Widespread but uncommon in lowland dry forest and gallery forest on sandy soils from Paraguay to eastern Brazil. Does best in drier areas and can be deciduous in colder times of the year.

Care and Cultivation of Annona spinescens

Sow seed in a well drained seed raising mix. Keep warm until germination. Annona spinescens likes a full sun to part shade position with adequate moisture and regular fertiliser. Tropical and subtropical zones.
