Description

Acacia oldfieldii is an openly branched shrub to straggly tree from 1.5- 5 metres tall. Localised but common in coastal areas from near Eradu (east of Geraldton) north to Kalbarri Natational Park, WA. Grows in sand, sandy loam, and clayey sand overlying sandstone, limestone, ironstone and gravel, in dense sandplain scrub or shrubland with species of Calothamnus and Melaleuca (WorldWideWattle website).

Acacia oldfieldii belongs to a section of the Acacia genus which has members well known for their chemistry, including A. obtusifolia, A. phlebophylla and A. maidenii. Closely related to A. acuminata.

Care and Cultivation of Acacia oldfieldii

Scarification is required for Acacia oldfieldii seeds. Pour just boiled water over the seeds and allow to soak for a few hours to overnight. Plant 5mm under the surface of a well drained seed raising mix in full sun. Keep moist until germination.

Prefers a sandy/gravel/loam soil. Well drained soil. Fast growing and hardy. Likes a full sun position.
