Acacia acuminata – Raspberry Jam Wattle (plant)

Description

Acacia acuminata is a shrub/tree 3-10 metres tall. Occurs in southwest WA where it extends from just north of the Murchison River south to Borden and east to Balladonia; outlying populations occur near Yalgoo and Paynes Find. The eastern boundary of the main area of occurrence abuts that of A. burkittii which is common in the adjacent Arid Zone (Info at WorldWideWattle).

The common name refers to the smell of freshly cut wood. The phyllodes contain a number of tryptamines, similar to Acacia obtusifolia and is a great substitute in the garden. It has been reported in recent legal analysis to contain 14.6mg/g DMT.

Care and Cultivation of Acacia acuminata

Acacia acuminata prefers a sandy/gravel and well drained soil. Fast growing and hardy. Likes a full sun position and is tolerant of dry conditions once established. Fertilise sparingly. This species prefers a mediterranean climate (drier summers and wetter winters) and can be a little tricky in humid areas on the east coast.
