Ventilago viminalis – Supplejack (plant)

Ventilago viminalis is a small tree, up to 6m tall with a dense crown. Starting life as a woody climber (a bit like native Capers) before becoming a tree with age. Native to semi arid regions of Northern Australia. Aboriginals mashed the roots and bark in water and used it for toothache, rheumatism, swellings, cuts and sores (Lassak & McCarthy. Australian Medicinal Plants). Its ashes were also mixed with native tobacco. The bark contains triterpenes and a number of anthraquinone derivatives.
