Trichocereus bridgesii – Achuma (cactus)
Trichocereus bridgesii is a South American columnar cactus species from Bolivia (La Paz). Also called Echinopsis lageniformis due to a taxonomy change. An upright species to 2-6 metres tall, large nocturnal white flowers and edible fruit. Trichocereus bridgesii is traditionally used in similar ways as Trichocereus pachanoi (San Pedro).
Care and Cultivation of Trichocereus bridgesii
Keep Trichocereus bridgesii in part-shade until large enough to deal with full-sun, which will depend on the increasing exposure you give the cactus. Once established, Trichocereus species can be watered most of the year in all climates, although they will cease to grow or slow right down over winter in colder areas. Fertilise regularly with fish emulsion/seaweed at half strength over the growing season. Osmocote is also useful.
