Nepeta cataria – Catnip (seed)
Catnip is a fragrant member of the Lamiaceae family and the Nepeta genus contains over 250 species. Native to Europe, South West and Central Asia. Has a stimulating effect on cats which roll in Catnip, obviously with much pleasure. Is used to stuff cat toys.
Contains Nepetalactones which are thought to be the compounds responsible for the effect on felines. Is also reputed to have hallucinogenic effects and has been used as a tea and popular smoking mix.
Care and Cultivation Seeds can be sown most of the year except winter. Sow just under the surface of a quality potting mix or directly into the garden.
