Mammillaria heyderi (seed)
Out of stock
A small solitary cactus species from Mexico/USA. Reported as being used for its stimulant properties. One assay we found online reports the following:
All 48 ounces were consumed over a 2 hour period. The first effect were noted approximately 45 minutes after consuming 24 ounces of liquid. The first sensation was a tingling on the lips along with a feeling of euphoria. After all the liquid was consumed the peak sensation was very narcotic in nature and very enjoyable. The were no visuals during the experience nor was there any expected as the species is traditionally used for its narcotic properties.

Mammillaria heyderi seed should be sown in sterile cacti mix, either in terracotta pots or plastic. Growers either prefer one or the other and I prefer terracotta as they regulate the moisture better and provide even germination. Fill the pot with mix and water in until it is completely soaked and let drain. Sprinkle seeds over the surface making sure they are not too dense. Cover the seed lightly with mix and mist the surface to settle the soil and seeds. Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap and leave in a warm spot in 50-75% shade. Fluctuating temperatures are best (ie. high day temperature and low night temperature) as they simulate the desert environment. Seedlings will emerge in 7-21 days and can be grown in the same environment for a number of months. Mist when almost dry. Mulch with small gravel (1-2mm diameter) once a few months old as this helps them stay upright, hinders algae growth and regulates moisture.
As they get older the watering can become deeper and more frequent. Potting up can be done when 5-10mm in diameter. Keep in part-shade. Like other arid zone cacti, they require a dry over-wintering otherwise they may succumb to rot. It also promotes flowering.
