Glycyrrhiza uralensis – Chinese Licorice (seed)
Glycyrrhiza uralensis is an major herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It stimulates the adrenocorticol hormones, relaxes spasms, reduces pain and inflammation, controls coughing, is expectorant and laxative. It also neutralises toxins and balances blood sugar levels. Used in most TCM preparations to disguise the taste of unpleasant herbs.
Care and Cultivation
Sow Glycyrrhiza uralensis seeds in a well drained aerated mix, 5mm under the surface. Keep moist until germination. Likes deep, rich sandy soil in full sun. Remove flower heads to encourage larger roots. Perennial herb forming a large rootstock (the part used in medicine), aerial parts die back over colder months.
