Description

Citrus australis or the Australian Round Lime is native to QLD, from Beenleigh north. Also called Gympie Lime, Doojay or Native Lime. It is a drought hardy native Citrus growing up to 5m in exposed locations or up to 10m in a forest situation. The fruit have a thick rind and have a lot of oils present (they have been described as sticky golfballs); there may be a market for the oil in aromatherapy or perhaps the citrus oil cleaner market. The flesh is good and sharp tasting. You can cut the fruit in half and squeeze the odd shaped vesicles out just like Finger Limes; I find them as good as or better than Finger Limes.

Care and Cultivation of Citrus australis

Soak Citrus australis seeds in water overnight before sowing to allow them to hydrate fully. If you can manage, it is preferable to peel the outer skin from the seeds for better and faster germination, but this can be tricky without a microscope and tweezers (there are two layers, its best not to peel the 2nd layer as this holds the cotyledons together).

Sow Citrus australis seeds under the surface of a good quality seed raising mix and keep moist until germination in 14-28 days. Citrus australis likes a full sun to part shade position with adequate moisture and regular fertiliser, just like normal Citrus. Easy to care for and drought hardy once established.
