Description

A beautiful, delicate looking cactus that likes a semi-shaded position with regular watering in all seasons except winter, where the soil should be kept fully dry. Such an amazing cactus, they develop a really large taproot like a carrot.

Care and Cultivation

The best potting mixes for this genus of cacti are generally those that are almost devoid of organic material. When using a mix composed of crushed granite, gypsum, sand, dolomite, perlite and pumice, we find the roots to be much more fine, capable of extracting nutrients and water, plus the overall health of the plant is increased. Saying that, we do recommend about 5-10% coco peat as the organic part of you blend if you choose, this can cut down on time between waterings if you live in a warm climate. Mulch cacti with crushed rock or pebbles.

Water a few times a week when dry during the hotter months and slowly decrease watering as autumn/winter approach. They enter hibernation during winter and need to be kept dry, this also encourages flowers in the spring/summer. Watering over winter will encourage root rot and death. The cactus will tend to go a little soft and shrink somewhat over winter; this is normal and nothing to worry about.

These cacti are self-pollinating and therefore do not require a second individual to cross-pollinate, although seed set will be much higher when crossed with another individual. Seaweed and fish emulsion are excellent for these cacti, use fortnightly to monthly in the growing season, applied at below the recommended strength. Small amounts of gypsum can be used as a rock fertiliser and we also find dolomite to be excellent (sprinkle a small amount every few months around the cactus to decrease acidity caused by fertilisers; they really love the calcium too).

Plants turning a red/pink colour indicate that they are receiving too much direct sunlight. Move them into a more shaded area and they should revert to their healthy blue/green colour. These cacti are grown to organic standards without the use of any pesticides/fungicides.
