Description

Andrographis paniculata has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, native to Southern China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. Called King of Bitters for a reason, Andrographis is an extremely bitter tonic herb that lowers fever, improves appetite, expels intestinal parasites, has antibacterial/antiviral/antifungal properties and is used for a wide range of ailments such as malaria, influenza, liver and digestive problems. A good herb for those suffering from dengue or Ross River Virus. Traditionally the herb can be pounded into a paste and swallowed or made into a tea and taken 1-3 times daily for a few weeks.

Andrographis paniculata possesses antihepatotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatitic, antithrombogenic, antiinflammatory, anti-snake venom, and antipyretic properties to mention a few, besides its general use as an immunostimulant agent (Wikipedia, sic). Info at Wikipedia

Care and Cultivation of Andrographis paniculata

Sow Andrographis paniculata seeds just below the surface of a well drained seed raising mix and keep moist until germination in 1-3 weeks. Likes a part shade to sunny position, adequate soil moisture and a rich friable soil with good drainage. Pinch out flowers to encourage more foliage growth.
